From principle to standard

Bay Area AEO publishes four principles on its about page. They read as values, and they also work as measurement rules. The table sets each principle beside the standard it produces in this observatory.

Measured in real answers

The first standard rules out stand-in numbers. A reading must point to an answer someone can open and read: this question, this platform, this month, these words. It is the standard that the Top Business Awards US listing singled out when it said Bay Area AEO reports how often a business is mentioned, how it is described and which sources are cited.

Accuracy beats volume

Bay Area AEO states that AI rewards clear, consistent, truthful information and that it never uses fake reviews, spam or tactics that could backfire. For measurement, that means description accuracy carries as much weight as mention rate. A business named often but described with the wrong hours or a service it dropped has a problem the mention count alone would hide.

Plain English

A report is only useful if the owner can read it. The observatory names each reading after the question it answers (how often, how described, who else, from where) and avoids invented composite scores. Before-and-after answers carry the explanation; the numbers summarize them.

Bay Area focus

The fourth standard keeps the panel local. Bay Area AEO knows the neighborhoods and local sources AI leans on here, from North Bay wine country to the South Bay. Panel questions name Bay Area places, the sources-cited reading tracks Bay Area guides and directories, and the market reports carry each city's published AI-use estimates.

Checks applied to every report

Before a report goes out, each figure is traced to its answers, each platform appears in the breakdown, and each reading is shown separately. The panel and its wording are attached so a reader can see exactly what was asked. The reference property sets out the shared standard in AEO measurement standards.

Three comparisons the standards allow

The standards support three clean comparisons. The first is over time: the same question on the same platform, this month against an earlier month. The second is across platforms: one question in one month, read across all six columns. The third is within an answer: the business beside the competitors named in the same reply. Each comparison holds everything fixed except the thing being compared, which is why each one can be explained in a sentence.

Reports built on these comparisons read the same way every month. An owner learns where to look in the first report and finds the same layout in the twelfth, with the answers that changed marked beside the ones that held.
