The published timeline

Bay Area AEO states its timeline in three sentences. Listing and data fixes can start showing up in AI answers within a few weeks, because many assistants pull live information. Content, reviews and third-party mentions build over two to four months. Prompts are re-tested monthly so progress is visible.

Top Business Awards US quoted this timeline in its award listing and called it an honest timeline. For the observatory, the timeline is a reading guide: it says which part of the panel should move first and which should be read over a longer stretch.

The first weeks

Listing fixes come first because many assistants pull live information. When hours and categories are corrected on Google, Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp, the next monthly run often shows the correction in the answer text. The first reading to change is usually description accuracy: the business is described with the right hours or the right service before it is named more often.

Two to four months

Content and reviews build alongside third-party mentions. A new service page has to be found and read; a review program adds customer language one visit at a time; a mention in a local guide appears when the guide publishes. Across two to four monthly runs, the observatory looks for these to show up in the sources-cited reading and then in the mention rate on the questions they address.

Why monthly

A monthly re-test fits both windows. It is frequent enough to catch listing fixes within the first cycle and steady enough to show content and mentions building over a season. Each month adds a layer to the AI answer index, so progress reads as a sequence of real answers.

Seasonal questions

Some panel questions belong to a season: AC repair during a heat wave in Concord, a roof leak before the rain in San Jose, holiday pre-orders at a bakery. The monthly cadence lets those rows be read in the months customers ask them, which is when the answer matters most to the business.

What each re-test looks for

Table. What the observatory looks for in successive monthly re-tests.
Re-testFocus of the reading
FirstCorrected listing facts appearing in answer text; description accuracy
SecondCorrections spreading to more platforms; first citations of new pages
Third and fourthContent, reviews and mentions showing in sources cited and mention rate
Every later monthThe full panel, with new rows for added services or places

The table is a reading guide built from the published timeline. Each business moves at its own pace, and the monthly answers show that pace directly, platform by platform. Reading the re-tests in this order keeps attention on the layer of work that has had time to reach the answers.

Why listing data travels fastest

Many assistants look up a business's listing at the moment a customer asks. A corrected listing is read on the next lookup. Pages and mentions take a different route: they have to be published and found, then judged trustworthy before an assistant leans on them. That difference is the reason the published timeline has two speeds, and the reason the observatory reads the panel in the same two speeds.
